28mm War of the Spanish Succession / Marlburian / WSS

The War of the Spanish Succession or Marlburian period (if you're an 'old school wargamer') has always fascinated me since I was a nipper. The 1704 campaign which led to the battle of Blenheim saw an allied army of British, Brandenburg, Danish, Dutch, Hanoverian, Hessian, Mecklenburg, Prussian and Wurtemburg troops march deep into Europe to defeat a combined army of French and Bavarians in a major victory of the war. A famous victory for Marlborough and Eugene of Savoy. Wargaming the period would be a major task for me hobbywise which will start with choosing which manufacturer would provide the bulk of suitable miniatures.

At the moment I'm not sure whether to collect 28mm miniatures manufactured by 'Ebor' or 'Front Rank', currently I ordered some samples from Front Rank and below are the results:
These Front Rank miniatures are detailed in such a way you can paint facial expressions with relative ease.
British Grenadier circa 1704 priming grenade.
Foot Guard Sergeant c.1704 my camera doesn't pick up detail to well, this guy has 5 o'clock shadow on his chin.
Foot Guard officer 1704 this miniature is posed to look up at a mounted senior officer example below.

Lord Cutts at the battle of Blenheim 1704. A nice clean figure, Front Rank miniatures are a joy to paint I must admit, with a minimum of flash and reasonably priced.

Samples purchased from Ebor will follow next when I have some spare cash.

King John

I thought I would have a look at Trent miniatures 'Newark' personality range as sold by North Star, its is a large 28mm figure, well cast in two pieces (rider & horse) and nice to paint. Mounted on a 25mm x 50mm plasticard base with grass, dirt textures, grass tufts and yellow flowering weeds.
For reference I just googled King John and downloaded a jpeg of stained glass window with his coat of arms on it.

Painted over the weekend I popped it on ebay if anyone is interested just look for ebay ID peterw3169 or item number: 121142997261

Wars of the Roses 1455-1485

Hi Just a brief post cos I'm a bit busy, but here is a command base painted this week on ebay.co.uk at the moment (ebay Item Id: 121139507485) Lord Henry Stafford.
Lord Henry Stafford (1425-1471)
Henry's personal standard a swallow-tailed banner is handpainted on metal foil.

Henry fought at the Battle of Towton on the Lancastrian side but survived and was later pardoned by Edward IV on 25 June 1461. He was with Edward IV on 12 March 1470 at the Battle of Losecoat Field where the rebel forces of Sir Robert, Lord Wells were defeated. Although choosing the winning side, Henry was so badly wounded at the battle of Barnet that he never recovered and died in his bed on 14 October 1471.

These miniatures are manufactured by Perry Miniatures and painted by me at the miniaturepaintingstudio@live.co.uk

The base is 60mm round mdf textured with grass tufts and white flowers to denote his Yorkist allegiance.

28mm Late Republican Roman Army

Hi There, I've decided to have a go at finishing some of my Romans, I have two Roman armies at the moment.

The first is a Late Roman Republican Army, the second is a Ceasarian Roman army both are from the Civil War period  and can either be combined into a larger force or can fight a civil war campaign against each other.

The Late Republican army is based upon the army that fought Julius Caesar, consisting of Roman legionaries and a number of allies and auxiliaries including at least one elephant, Numidian light cavalry, Gallic cavalry, Spanish cavalry and light infantry skirmishers (caetrati). The army is finished but I'll try to increase the detail on command figures and maybe add a camplife vignette etc.

Loyalist Roman legionaries ready to do battle against Julius Caesar for the Senate.
All the shields are handpainted - I don't use transfers.
Cavalry contingent consisting of Gallic mercenaries.

The Command stand (Wargames Foundry miniatures).

Light Cavalry provided by the Numidian Ally Juba I.
A small African Forest elephant crewed by Roman Legionaries (elephant manufactured by Aventine miniatures, all the crew are Foundry miniatures).

28mm Ancient German Army

I thought I'd give the Ancient Greeks a rest for the moment, time for some proper barbarians to fight my Caesarian Late Roman Republican Armies. Starting with 3x General command stands, representing the German commander-in-chief/Tribal Chieftain and 2 other subordinate commanders.

The main man, The German Tribal Chief wearing captured Roman armour, and a shock of red hair. A mix of 'Wargames Foundry' & 'Black Tree Design' miniatures.

One of two subordinate commanders. The base is 60mm diameter mdf, 2mm thick
The last of the subordinate generals, I think it's always best to start at the top and work down army wise.
A closeup of a bunch of unruly tribal warriors. Exclusively 'Black Tree Design' miniatures. All shield designs are hand painted.

German barbarians massing on the borders of Gaul offering the beginings of a serious threat to Roman expansion in Gaul. I have a shed load of these figures to paint, mostly 'Black Tree Design' miniatures which are properly good figures.

A German Warrior proudly shows off the latest addition to his collection.
I'll hopefully update this page as the painting progresses.
